Forty Years in the Music Industry

So 1964 seems a long time ago ................................. or maybe not !

from those great early days at VOX

working with Tom Jennings and Dick Denney
and
Derek Underdown, Alan Harding, Doug McDonald, Dave Roberts
Leslie J. Hills and Mick Bennett
and so many more

The Pioneers
of our musical industry

The first John Oram studio, the very first indie'

Independent Recording Studios, Gravesend, Kent, England

opened in 1964 while John was still drumming and working at VOX during
the day, studio at night and weekends. Studio sessions, live playing and
lots of studying applying knowledge to electronic musical products.

In 1969, he left VOX and formed Oram Consulting with Jennings as his first Client.
After a while more customers
came for his design skills where the design base expanded to medical electronics and
commercial shipping applications. All electronics, but not musical enough: ................ so

Trident Audio Developments came in the 70's, owned then by the dynamic
Sheffield Brothers of Trident Studios fame.
Malcolm Toft was Managing Director and I was hired for a 10 week contract
to design the Trident Parametric EQ., At that time, the Trident Technical Director
was Barry Porter, circuits designer of the Trident "A" & "B" Range mixers.
Extremely impressed by John's fast turnaround and great EQ, he was offered
another product design. Mr Porter left the company at this time.

John's first console design was the Trident Fleximix. Malcolm set the spec., and created the
ergonomics and system flow. John created the circuitry, mostly all from first
principles, and determined the sound.

In Malcolm's words (taken from a business plan drawn-up by him to launch MTA, a company
of which John was Company Secretary and Director) he stated their respective roles:

"John Oram, was responsible not only for that company’s innovative
design techniques, but also the unique sound quality
that Trident became famous for world-wide."

Products flowed from this successful design team producing greats as:-

and many more up to 1986
